2005 ILCRICC Wrap-up

by Farfel Miller III

Cedar City, Utah - The sports world sometimes gets so focused on one big event, that other gems are lost in the undercurrent. This weekend, with so much focus on the PGA at Baltusrol, some have momentarily forgotten about that tournament that many suggest will one day be considered alongside the great majors: The International Lesser Cedar Ridge Invitational Closed Classic. Every year, the AGA (Archibald Golf Association) sponsers this meeting of the AGA tours great player. A relatively new tournament, with this being the 4th year of existence. The inaugural tournament was won by James Archibald, with the next two being won by Chris Archibald, who has relished his time as two-time defending champion.

This year the tournament lost some of the media circus usually surrounding it, with the absence of perrenial contender Thom Archibald. The first day ended uneventfully, with Chris playing 2 under in the last three to shoot even par, and Jim shooting a stellar 2-under par round of 71. The real tension came on the back nine on Thursday, where AGA careers are made and lost. Chris had been playing exellently , but putting poorly all day, while Jim had struggled to "find his game" despite his use of Taylor Made equipment. After a chris birdie on number 12, the two were tied. Chris was right back in it, and the gallery held its collective breath. But then the unthinkable happened, with Chris bogeying several holes in a row, and falling from contention. Jim ended up winning with a tournament total of 3 over par, while Chris came in at 6 over. Not the best golf ever played at the I.L.C.R.I.C.C., but still exciting competition none-the-less. The most telling stat of the day was Chris' 38 putts. (Yes, you read that right, from the number one putter on the AGA tour) Chris had 1 one-putt and 3 three-putts, and two-putts on every hole on the back nine. Not the kind of performance we have come to expect. Until next year, this is Farfel the golf man, peace out.
